Gene Autry - Very Good Western
A very good western from late in Autry's film career with a good story with a bit of fantasy to it, well acted by some good actors. William Sande (Jake Fargo) is excellent as the vicious escaped convict and Jock O'Mahoney (who also did a lot of the stunt work) and Francis McDonald make fine escapees as well. Thurston Hall brings a little patrician humor to his role as "ghost". Clem Bevans (Loco John) makes a wonderful old=timer. Nan Leslie is fine as the plain schoolteacher - but let down that hair, take off those glasses beauty - who believes in ghosts and gets magically transformed. A bit fanciful, bit it all hangs together very well. There is, mercifully, no comic sidekick to spoil the overall feel of the film, nor are there a lot of songs to interrupt the action - just a few as needed. Better than usual Autry western.
